In Mouthshape mode this screen is used to demonstrate the mouthshapes associated with individual consonants and vowels. The consonant and vowel buttons are grouped according to type.
Clicking a consonant or vowel button will display basic information about the mouthshape, and give a couple of example sentences. Grace illustrates the mouthshape itself.
Switching to Fingerspell mode will disable the consonant and vowel buttons. You can
now type lower-
Most program features will work with either mouthshapes or fingerspell signs. Mouthshapes are based on sounds, and don't necessarily have anything to do with the letters of the word. Fingerspell signs, on the other hand, are based strictly on spelling.
Observation lies at the heart of Lipreading, so the ability to recognise mouthshapes and to tell the difference between similar shapes is vital. This program mode allows you to display two different shapes to compare them.
This mode introduces animation. Pick a word from one of the lists in the program data files, and animate it using either mouthshapes or fingerspell signs.
The animation can be played, paused, and resumed. You can reset it at any time, and you can step through the word, mouthshape by mouthshape or letter by letter, to examine it in detail. Animation speed can be adjusted to suit you.
In this mode you can also hide the wordlist, select a word at random, and try to identify it by lipreading.
Sentence mode strings groups of words together to form a sentence for animation. Sentences are associated with specific wordlists, and can only contain words from that list.
In addition to the normal animation controls, sentence mode also allows you to select and play, and step through, individual words from the sentence.
Once again, you can use this mode with mouthshapes or fingerspell signs. You can also hide the sentences and pick one at random to try to identify it.
Passages are sentences grouped together and saved as a separate file. You select and play each sentence in turn.
Animation controls are identical to those in Sentence mode
In Q and A a set of eight questions are selected at random by the program. Your task
is to watch the question being spoken, and to enter what you think is a suitable
answer. When the next question is selected, the previous question -
As with other features, you can observe the question in Mouthshapes or Fingerspell signs.
Animation speed can be adjusted, but no other controls are available in this mode.
